Venture Partner, Aberdare Ventures
Dr. Kisner has served as one of our directors since April 2001. He is currently a partner at Aberdare Ventures, a healthcare investment firm. Previously he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Caliper Technologies, Inc., from 1999 to 2003. From 1994 to 1999, Dr. Kisner was President and Chief Operating Officer of Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., having served as Executive Vice President from 1991 to 1994. Dr. Kisner serves on the boards of directors of numerous private biotechnology companies in his capacity at Aberdare Ventures. Dr. Kisner holds a BA from Rutgers University and an MD from Georgetown University. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Cofounder, President & Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Ringler is a cofounder of Tolerx, and has served as its President, Chief Executive Officer, and Director since inception in July 2000. Dr. Ringler has over 25 years of experience as an academician, scientist, and executive in biomedical research focusing on the research and development of therapies designed to alter immunological responses. Dr. Ringler received his BS and VMD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He then completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School, beginning as a Research Fellow and ultimately becoming Chairman and Associate Professor of Comparative Pathology over a 10-year time frame. Subsequently, from 1993 to 1998, Dr. Ringler was a founding scientific and executive officer of LeukoSite, Inc., a biotechnology company that was ultimately sold to Millennium Pharmaceuticals in 1999, and from which two products (Campath® and Velcade®) were developed and approved for sale worldwide.
Founder, BIOptima Advisors
Elizabeth A. Czerepak is founder of BIOptima Advisors, a New York-based consulting firm offering comprehensive services to therapeutics-based companies. She is also a founding partner of Bear Stearns Health Innoventures, a $212 million venture capital fund which led investments in 13 biotechnology companies, seven of which Elizabeth served as a board member. Concurrent to BSHI, she held the position of Managing Director of Bear Stearns and Co. and JPMorgan. Earlier, Elizabeth gained 18 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in business development and finance at BASF Pharma, Hoffmann-La Roche, and Merck & Co. Elizabeth holds an MBA from Rutgers University and a B.A. magna cum laude from Marshall University. She is a member of Licensing Executives Society and is an NASD Registered Representative.
Cofounder, Chairman, Scientific Advisory Board
Professor Waldmann is a cofounder of Tolerx. He has served as one of our directors since our inception in July 2000 and is Chairman of our Scientific Advisory Board. Herman has been a Professor of Pathology, Head of the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford, and Clinical Director of the Therapeutic Antibody Centre (TAC), University of Oxford, since 1994. Prior to that, Herman was a professor at the University of Cambridge. Herman holds a PhD and honorary DSc from the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathology, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Herman was also the winner of the Scrip BTG lifetime achievement award in 2007 for his work pioneering the application of humanized monoclonal antibodies as therapeutics.
Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer , Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Mr. Smith has served as one of our directors since March 2004. Prior to joining Vertex in November 2001, he served as a partner in the Life Science and Technology Practice Group of Ernst & Young LLP, an accounting firm, from 1999 to 2001. As Vertex’s CFO, Mr. Smith holds responsibility for a wide variety of core functions at Vertex, including Finance, Strategic Communications, Information Systems and Operations. Mr. Smith is also a member of the Executive Team at Vertex. Mr. Smith received a B.A. with honors in Accounting and Finance from Manchester Metropolitan University. Mr. Smith is a current member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, and the Financial Executives Institute. Mr. Smith is a member of the Board of Directors of Acorda Therapeutics, Infinity Pharmaceuticals, and Tolerx Inc.
Managing Director, New Leaf Ventures
Dr. Niedel has served as one of our directors since December 2002. He is a Managing Director at New Leaf Ventures and focuses on their biopharmaceuticals efforts. He was one of the founders of New Leaf in 2005, having moved with the healthcare team from Sprout, where he had been a venture partner since 2002. Prior to joining the venture industry, Jim was Chief Science and Technology Officer for GlaxoSmithKline and from 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the board of directors of Glaxo Wellcome plc with responsibility for Global Research and Development, Information Technology and Product Strategy. From 1988 to 1995, he was VP Research and SVP R&D for the US subsidiary of Glaxo. Before joining the pharmaceutical industry, Jim was Professor of Medicine and Chief of the division of Clinical Pharmacology at Duke Medical School, where he had completed an Internal Medicine residency and a Hematology-Oncology fellowship. He received M.D. and Ph.D. (Biochemistry) degrees from the University of Miami, was selected a Searle Scholar, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London). He is on the Board of Intarcia Therapeutics, Tioga Pharmaceuticals, and Tolerx.
Managing Director, HealthCare Ventures
Mr. Littlechild has served as one of our directors since April 2004. Mr. Littlechild has been a Managing Director of HealthCare Ventures since 1992. Prior to joining HealthCare Ventures, he was one of the founding general partners of Advent International in Boston, after opening the London office of Advent UK. He also held a similar position at Citicorp Venture Capital. Before his career in venture capital, Mr. Littlechild held marketing and financial management positions with Rank, Xerox, and ICI. Mr. Littlechild was a member of the board of fellows of the Council for Harvard Medicine. Mr. Littlechild received his BSc (1st class Honors) from Manchester University and his MBA degree from Manchester Business School.
Managing Director, Skyline Ventures
Dr. Hoffman is a Managing Director at Skyline Ventures. Prior to joining Skyline in May 2007, he was a General Partner at TVM Capital from 2003 to 2007. Prior to that, he served as President, Chief Executive Officer, and a Director of Allos Therapeutics from 1994 to 2002, where he remains Chairman of the Board. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Concert Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Dicerna Pharmaceuticals, Inc. From 1990 to 1994, Dr. Hoffman completed a fellowship in clinical oncology and a residency/fellowship in dermatology, both at the University of Colorado. Dr. Hoffman was the scientific founder of Somatogen Inc., where he held the position of Vice President of Science and Technology from 1987 until 1990. Dr. Hoffman received his PhD in bio-organic chemistry from Northwestern University and his MD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor.
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Dr. Wayne T. Hockmeyer has served as one of our directors since April 2001 and as Chairman of the Board since March 2005. Dr. Hockmeyer founded MedImmune, Inc. in April 1988 as President and Chief Executive Officer and was elected a Director in May 1988. He became Chairman of the Board of Directors in May 1993. He relinquished his position as Chief Executive Officer in October 2000 but served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of MedImmune and President of MedImmune Ventures, Inc. until the acquisition of MedImmune by AstraZeneca in June 2007.
